Well it’s a tad windy out there today so we are not sailing, but thought you might appreciate this video of a blow hole going off in the swell at the back of Ramsey last week! The good news is the weather is looking much better tomorrow so we will be running trips from 11.00.

October last year we were involved in helping with a rescue mission to Grassholm Island with the RSPB wardens from Ramsey. Ffion joined the team to help cut free the gannet chicks (and adults) that get tethered to their nests by the twine and netting they often use use to build them. Gannets will collect anything they find floating on the surface of the sea for their nests and sadly today this is as likely to be plastic as seaweed. The sheer scale of marine litter on Grassholm is shocking. Photographer Sam Hobson joined us to document it all in photographs. It is a heart breaking sight and Sam’s pictures are amazing if upsetting, well worth a look. We think they deserved to win!

So our latest excitement on Friday was provided by our first sighting this year of one of these strange creatures at the north end of Ramsey Island! Sunfish, or mola mola, are the world’s heaviest bony fish and whilst we usually only see little ones this far north, in warmer waters they can grow to an immense 3.2m and weigh up to 2300kg.

You are in safe hands with us! Skipper Ffion Rees may be small, but she is mighty! She has been working the waters round Ramsey for over 20 years (even if she doesn’t look it), a member of the lifeboat crew for over 10 years, a WISE accredited skipper, powerboat instructor and a qualified Marine Mammal Observer. Oh, and she has recently completed her first Atlantic crossing, just something she did in her spare time!

Well well, thats the season done for one of us! Hannah’s last day was yesterday, finished off with a lovely sunset shearwater trip, soaking up the best of Pembrokeshire before heading up north, which can only mean one thing, next year we will be recruiting. All suitable applicants must have a hearty appetite, be able to mock Ffion for her Croc wearing tendencies and ability to grow at least three chins whenever faced with a camera!
